Dog Days of Summer

I'm not sure why they call it the dog days of summer. Maybe it's because we all pant like dogs in the heat? Or maybe it's because so many of us go into heat at this time of year - all those bikinis at the beach, tanned skin everywhere, glistening with oil. Hold me back! Anyway, I'm not as young and randy as I once was, but I remember. Oh do I remember! Each new bit of "talent" as we called it back then brought new possibilities and new hopes into my heart and body. This old dog needs her sleep more these days than chasing after young pups.

What about sickness?

I've been thinking about sickness and health, and wondering how we know where we are on the continium. Sometimes I take a mental health day because I feel as though if I don't take a day off, I will become sick. Is that real or just in my imagination? There are people in the world, in China for instance, who never get a day off except once a year! Once a year for their annual holiday. Working every single day, not just 5 cays a week, and much longer hours too.  Plus they live where they work, in a dormitory at the factory and they eat the food provided by the factory.  They don't go out at night to acting class and rehearse with their singing group and take swimming lessons or yoga, or even visit the library or take a walk thru Stanley Park, or watch a DVD or play on the computer, or text their friends. They don't even get to phone home to their mothers.  All they do is work - making stuff for us to buy in the dollar store and Walmart. Cheaply....

Monday, Monday...

Can't trust that day...it's a great song, but is it true? I mean today, Monday, was similar to many other Mondays - grey and a bit wet, usual bit of business at work, some good coffee, a few challenges and most importantly? Someone visiting me after work to look forward to. Because after all, for me, the whole point of working is to be able to have enough money to live healthy and to see my friends and family. Yes, my fabulous actress friend came over for supper and we cooked and drank wine and talked and went out for a walk and all felt right with the world. And that, my friends, is what it's all about.

SUNDAY IN NEW WESTMINSTER

Image
It's a Sunday in New Westminster and I've been a busy single girl. Got up early to watch Corrie Street (what is with the recent crime wave?) and clean up and eat and yog - and prepare for the arrival of my quartet, The Sonic Project. It was just like an episode of Sex in the City - almost. Except without all the beautiful bodies, and fabulous clothes, and the dining out and the Cosmopolitans and the constant sex and...well you get the idea. I'm living in a dream world. But I do plan on seeing the new Sex in the City movie tonight, with a fellow dyke who is as fashion-conscious as yours truly. Yup, there will be denim and flip flops and fleece, I tell you! It will be magnificent. I don't know why I love this show and these movies, but I do. It's like cotton candy. I know it's not really good for me but it goes down so easily. And it's so gosh darned pretty! The stomach ache will be worth it.
