2019 A BLAST OF WINTER on our PRETTY LITTLE ISLAND
It's easy, living here, to almost forget that one lives in Canada. If one watches the news and weather reports at all, it's all wind and snow and ice all winter in the rest of Canada, while out here we are ooing and aahing over our little daffodils poking their heads up in February. In fact, it has been unseasonably warm during January and the first part of February.
Well, guess what?
We ARE part of Canada! We got a giant dump of snow, over several days, so much so that it came up to my thighs! And I am not short, people. No indeed.
The dog seemed to think it was fun. She was hopping and jumping all through the yard and smiling to beat the band.
The cat was not impressed and seemed to think it was my fault. He absolutely refuses to go outside at all. Cats are so opinionated.
My friend's little dog, Maude, stayed with us for a few days of the snow and it was impossible for her to even get off the deck. Imagine a 6" tall dog and 24" of snow Yes. It could be seen as funny, if you are not the little dog that is.
People got stuck at home, Long driveways with 2 feet of snow cannot be navigated by regular vehicles.
There are only 4 big plows on island, and two of them decided to break before the storm!
The road contractors plow the roads leading to ferries first, and then maybe the secondary roads, and almost never the tertiary roads. We have many hills and very tall hills (we even call them mountains - ok, so they're not the Rockies but they are impossible to climb with snow or ice on them!)
Most of us just hunker down with a fire in the woodstove, and hot soup and a headlamp in case the power goes out.
It is pretty - very, very pretty. And it's warming up now, melting slowly....oh, so slowly. Our little moment of Canadian-ness is almost over - for this year.
So glad I opted for snow tires this year. At least I could escape cabin fever entirely and get to town once to see other humans!
I still love Salt Spring Island but I just may take a look at warm places to go next winter.
