Gardening 2014
Spring is here and it's only April.
We (meaning Todd) (PIC) are digging in the vegetable garden area to make dog-paw shaped raised beds. This will amuse me to no end. We (meaning Todd again) are using split cedar rails pounded into the ground 2 1/2 feet, they will be strapped together (by Todd, of course) and then filled with good soil and my own compost.
This will be so fun to plant in - and hopefully my sweet dog will not be jumping up into those beds. She regularly runs thru the garlic plants, and I made a little cheesy fence to save the lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower I planted on Friday. So far she has not run thru there, so it may be working. Cross fingers.
(PICS)
The magnolia is about to blossom - big purple buds on there now. (SEE PIC).
Tulips are everywhere (SEE PIC).
Daffodils are everywhere (SEE PIC).
I also planted a couple new rhubarb plants because we can use all the fruit in making pies for the Fall Fair. Oh, yes, I became a "pie lady" this year, part of the Women's Institute. We make 500 pies for the Fall Fair and another 100 for the Apple Fest and we also supply pie for the Farmers' Institute Museum Day (not quite as daunting a task, of course).
Women make pie at home, as well as in the 3 bees we hold in the summertime.
This year I am in co-charge of accumulating enough fruit and other supplies to get these pies made.

So my eye is on the grocery store flyers for fruit on sale, as well as gathering all the free fruit possible. Many people have rhubarb in their yards, and blackberries are free for the picking. And maybe some plums and a few apples. But strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, peaches, mangoes all must be purchased. And the less we spend on the ingredients, the more money we make for all the local charities and scholarships we donate our profits to. (Uh oh - ended in a participle there.)
